From questions to quests and vice versa

“‘In the beginning,  there was chaos.’
‘Show us chaos, please oh Snowman! Show us a picture of chaos!’ They’d struggled with pictures at first. ‘Is it real?’
‘No, it is not real.’
‘What is this not real?’

‘Not real can tell us about real.'”

Margaret Atwood, Oryx and Crake

I’m interested in the rhetorical dynamic between the not-real and real in environmental discourse, particularly growing local concerns over climate change and sea-level rise in my home in Hampton Roads, Virginia. I’m also exploring my pedagogical approaches to teaching climate change risk and crisis communication, most notably the use of climate change games that explore mitigation and adaptation efforts, focusing particularly on how these simulations influence students’ understanding of climate change discourse and bridge students toward active participation in research sites at Old Dominion University.

This blog represents my current questions and quests (a purposeful reference to gaming) as a PhD student and instructor in professional and Technical Writing. Your feedback is not only welcome; it’s a valuable part of each quest.
